Richmond
Step back in time in this colonial town as you explore more than 50 Georgian buildings that have been brought back to life as cafés, restaurants and stores.

Founded in the early 19th century, Richmond’s pioneer and convict heritage can still be seen throughout the town today. Explore its historic streets to see meticulously restored sandstone buildings and heritage-listed attractions. Stop by the Richmond Gaol to learn about life for convicts during the early days of white Australian settlement. Capture photos of the historic Richmond Bridge, built by convicts in the 1820s.

Located just a 30-minute drive from Hobart, Richmond can easily be visited as a daytrip from the capital. Plan an extended stay and book accommodation Those looking to stay longer will find accommodation. In the midst of the Coal River Valley Wine Region, Richmond serves as an excellent base for visiting the area’s cellar doors and wineries. Sample pinot noir and chardonnay, two regional specialities, during your stay.

Throughout the town you’ll find sandstone structures built in the Georgian style that have been kept in their 19th-century condition. Take a self-guided tour of Richmond Gaol to experience the conditions under which Australia’s convict migrants lived. Stand within the confines of their small cells to understand what life was like within the prison that was built over 15 years from 1825.

See native Australian animals, including kangaroos and lorikeets, alongside introduced species at the Zoodoo Zoo. The family-friendly attraction is located on the outskirts of Richmond.
