A delightful 18th century fishermans cottage nestled in the heart of Glen Wyllin

NEWLY IMPROVED FOR 2024 - Now with shower room and fitted kitchen with all the mod con’s! 18th Century meets 21st Century.

Wyllin Cot is a delightful 18th century fisherman's cottage, nestled in the hamlet of Glen Wyllin and is steeped in history. Glen Wyllin started out life as a mill and Wyllin means ‘mill’ in Manx. The cottage was built in the 18th century and this tiny yet perfectly formed building has been restored sympathetically to maintain original character with modern day luxuries. A very special feature of Wyllin Cot is the garden that comes with it. Take a walk down a private grassy path opposite the cottage, to a peaceful and enclosed garden of considerable size. Also available for your use is the summer house, where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

It is situated in a conservation area where there are immediate walks on your door step. You can take a lovely wooded riverside walk in Coooildarry Nature Reserve which is owned by the Manx Wildlife Trust or down to the beach and along the coast.

You are spoilt for choice in Wyllin Cot as you can completely relax on the colder days in the unique slipper bath in the master bedroom, or you can curl up next to the log burner. If you are more of an adventurous type and like to be out and about exploring there are plenty of mountain bike trails, lots of tarmac for those road cyclists or for motor bike enthusiasts with immediate access to the Isle of Man TT course. For walkers the Raad Ny Foillan coastal footpath or up into the hills and all without jumping into a car!

There is a lounge/kitchen with a downstairs toilet and shower room and upstairs the Master bedroom with a slipper bath. Next door your dressing room with hair dryer, straighteners and clothes hangers/storage.

Please note the slipper bath wouldn’t suit anyone with mobility issues as you need to be able to step into the bath.

Situated across the lane from the house and originally set up by 2 entrepreneurs in the late 1800s, when the railway ran into Glen Wyllin, as a Victorian garden with a tea room. Rare plants were brought into the garden to thrive into this area which is now owned by the cottage. A beautiful and large wild garden with a river running alongside provides the perfect setting for you to unwind.

Relaxing stay
A cozy and comfortable little cottage in a very peaceful, but convenient location on the island. No microwave, but otherwise well stocked little kitchen. We enjoyed our stay.

Mini break
Relaxing stay in a great location. The cottage has loads of cute decorative touches, the log burner was cosy, and the bath was lovely and deep. Would stay again - maybe in the summer next time to make full use of the fabulous garden.

Very quaint
Took a while to adjust to the size of the cottage but that is all part of the fun staying in an old cottage. Overall we had a good time and would come again.

TT stay
Lovely little cottage but unfortunately suffering from damp throughout especially in the shower room floor, door and walls. Any washing we did had to be re-washed when we returned home as it smelt damp. We wouldn't stay here again. Parking was tricky as well with a van

Quirky cottage - enjoyable stay
Quirky cottage which makes maximum use of limited space. Best way is to go with it - we did and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It won’t be for everyone, especially those with limited mobility or if you enjoy a long shower - only option is sitting in the bath to wash.

Back from n time - with home comforts!
Lovely little cottage, beautifully and sympathetically decorated with traditional and up cycled furniture and clever touches of home. Load of hot water, cosy and warm with quirky features such as the bath in the bedroom! Suited us perfectly, but if anybody has mobility issues or is over 6ft the bath/bedroom could be a problem, but this is clearly stated on the booking info.

6/10 Okay

Not all it could be!
When my wife and I arrived at Wyllin Cot it became obvious that, especially in the downstairs living accommodation there were some rather odd arrangements. For a start, there was no table and chairs for use with meals. We were given instead, two foot square side tables! The bath (no shower) was in the bedroom and was just about big enough for use if you had your knees up around your chin! The bedroom had its own issues in the form of headroom as a result of a very low beam over the bed, which, if you failed to remember in the dark, resulted in a thump on the head. There were other things, which, given the cost of the accommodation could have been improved without denting the owners profit margin greatly!!! On the positive front, the property was in a good location for the races and Kirkmichael village (one pub!) and the garden, whilst across the road, was pleasant. We would not return to this property given our experiences there.

An old cottage stay
Its an old cottage with small rooms that has been improved but when you look round in detail there were cobwebs, paint work poor and finished badly, Windows would not open as painted shut? Fire hazard? No microwave although listed, the toilet is downstairs and the stairs are steep and fun negotiating! Place has a damp smell although they have had a water leak downstairs with the floor wet. Took us 1/2 hour to get the right channel on the tv working for the sky which only has basic channels. No room for a table to eat at so stuck to eating on the settee. front door key and locking a nightmare! Needs replacing as difficult to lock the door. Car parking fun in the dark as the space is small. However it is Well placed for walks and beach. The Bed is uncomfortable really needs a new mattress. Central heating keeps turning off via nest controller. Expensive for what you got. A lot of minor faults but on the whole a good place to stay!

4/10 Poor

Completely unsafe and not functional
We appreciated the aesthetic effort that had gone into this cottage and the booking process and key access was all fine. However, the cottage is not at all fit for purpose and I have serious concerns about the safety of a number of areas. - the oven is an integrated model that has not been integrated into anything, rather just placed in a freestanding dresser - it moves when you open it - the scuff marks show that this has been happening for some time - the hobs wheel out of the under stairs cupboard, but there is nowhere to use them and having crawled under a bench to plug them in, they have to sit blocking the access to the only entrance to the property. Moving past them is by squeezing through a gap, risking burning yourself, tipping pans over. - excessive damp smell throughout property and damp marks in bedroom - lack of handrail on stairs and lack of safety rail at the top of the stairs, leaving a three step drop to one side - stairs overhang doorway in hallway, causing a trip hazard In addition to these safety issues, there are a number of real design issues. - the only toilet in the property is in the utility room - this is billed as a wash room, but the taps don't work, they splutter everywhere, and the washer/dryer is also in there - the bath with 'seated shower' is in the middle of the bedroom underneath a sloping ceiling and it is not possible to stand in it.There is no rail or curtain, so water goes everywhere if using the shower. The bath is narrow and has exceptionally high sides, so sitting in it is very difficult. - there is a lack of lights throughout the property - a number of lamps are provided, but these were filthy and just not good enough to allow good vision - room to park one car across from the cottage - this space was labelled but difficult to find in the dark and was very tight and against a deep drop - a warning and a map before arrival would have helped here - front door is difficult to use - continually needed to be slammed - this can't be great for the neighbours - the ceiling in the bedroom is severely sloped and access to one side of the bed is not possible without almost crawling into the bed - a warning about this should have been present before booking. The general state of the cottage in terms of cleanliness was poor - surfaces were sticky, kitchen items needed washing, the mat in the living room is totally filthy (it's a coir weave type thing and the dirt in the crevices was easily visible). I didn't appreciate having to move a heavy chair in the living room to unplug and reset the router to get the wifi working - this should have been done before our arrival. There is no fire extinguisher in the property. We really found that this cottage was misrepresented and would be completely unsafe for children, animals, and anyone with any mobility or movement issue at all. I've tried very hard here to be as factual as possible in my account of the issues here, as I realise that someone has spent time and effort on this cottage - I hope these points help to improve the situation.

Cosy cottage close to a bus stop
We had a very enjoyable winter stay at this cottage, which made a good base for exploring the Island on the bus network (there is a stop on the main road, quite nearby). The cottage itself is small but cosy and we enjoyed the log burner and comfortable bathtub. There was a problem with the boiler while we were staying which was resolved with excellent service from Island Escapes.

Incredibly Cosy Cottage
What a gorgeous little cottage! Although the weather was against us, the cottage was so cosy to come back to after a day of adventures, the log burner had us toasty warm and comfortable in minutes! Wyllin Cott provided everything we could possibly need, the kitchen was well equipped, from potato peeler to coffee pod machine and the use of space was ingenious. We found the bedroom to be very comfortable, we took our 6 year old too who slept like a log in his little bed and particularly loved playing the board games provided in front of the fire while the wind was howling outside. We popped over to the lovely garden in our wellies and can imagine it would be gorgeous in the summer. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have already recommended it to lots of people. Thanks for having us!

Unfortunately we only stayed two nights out of the four
Sadly the cottage was not for us and we only stayed for the first two, out of four nights. We rarely give negative reviews, and would be happy if you decided not to publish this one. As we do appreciate the effort of the cottage owners, that have clearly put their heart into this little place. We also appreciated the response from Island Escapes in helping us get the hot water working. The bed was low and really uncomfortable for two people. The downstairs toilet and washing facilities was problematic. It was cold and damp (though the heating does work very well and maybe as a Winter ‘cosy cottage’ it works). The outdoor space was unusable ……. We went for a look at the summerhouse, as we hoped to invite our Grandchildren over for a picnic. The ground is covered in stinging nettles and the path down to it overgrown, with quite a few big brambles.

Quirky but very nicely presented
Wyllin Cot is smaller than expected but the owners have been very clever in maximising space in a very tasteful way. High quality fixtures, fittings and decor add to the enjoyment of the cottage. The cottage will not suit everyone as highlighted in the provided information because of the tight spaces but we loved it because of the character and decor.

Extended Weekend at Wyllin Cottage
A quirky little cottage, perfect for any couple seeking a weekend break/ few days break in a lovely quiet location within easy walking distance of Kirk Michael Village, Glen Wyllin beach and surrounding countryside. The allocated parking area is tight (but manageable) for a medium sized SUV car, located facing out of the cottage diagonally to the left off the narrow access road. We really enjoyed our short stay and would readily recommend the cottage to any active couple.
