Historic 1780 Manchester Farm House With Mountain Views and 7 Bedrooms

One of the oldest homes in the county, with 7 Bedrooms and 4 bathrooms on a secluded lot with mountain views. A spacious retreat for family and friends.
Home is about 3,800 Sq. Feet.
All towels and bed linens are provided.
Bathrooms were fully or partially renovated in 2016.

The house is located in Sunderland, on the south side of Manchester, and sits on 3+ acres with an old barn and arbor garden located on the property. Extra wooded acerage abuts the rear and south sides of the house, with access to a novice wooded hiking trail. The house backs up to 10 wooded acres with Vermont wildlife, which you may encounter.

PLEASE NOTE - This is an old/rustic farmhouse, which contains antique fixtures, furnishings, and decorative items.
If you prefer modern homes with brand new appliances, fixtures, and/or suburban type settings, this may not be the best rental for you.

The House: the first floor has a large Living Room, with a Samsung Smart TV and informal library; the Living Room opens to the Tap Room - complete with a traditional colonial cage bar - and then on to the spacious formal Dining Room with a wood-burning Rumford fireplace. The first floor also houses a quiet Den with an antique wood-burning stone fireplace.
Great cooking Kitchen with large Wolf gas stove & griddle, an attached Breakfast Room with a free-standing gas/propane 'warming fireplace' (not an insert), large laundry room, and a mudroom - with ample space to store ski equipment. Finally, a private main floor in-law suite with a Queen size bed, full bathroom, pull-out couch, and the home's second Smart TV. This suite is away from the other upstairs bedrooms; ideal for those who prefer more privacy and/or are unable to climb stairs.

Upstairs boasts six bedrooms and two full baths. One of the bedrooms is a double suite, with 2 full-size beds; the other 5 guest rooms have 1 full bed each.

The house has 4 bathrooms total, one of which is a half bath, with 2 full bathrooms upstairs, and 1 full + 1 half bathroom downstairs.

We have 2 A/Cs in the house: one is a window unit in the upstairs two bed suite, and the other one is portable.
*We do NOT have Central Air Conditioning in the house.*

The house has 4 fireplaces: 2 working wood-burning fireplaces, 1 gas/propane 'warming fireplace', and 1 decorative-only/non-functional fireplace. We do not provide firewood or kindling.

Relax and enjoy the great view of Mt. Equinox from one of the Adirondack or rocking chairs located on our covered front porch - [after a full day of shopping in Manchester, skiing at Bromley/Stratton, hiking the Green Mountains or fly fishing/tubing the Battenkill, of course! ]

*Sorry, but we do NOT allow parties, weddings/receptions, or events on the property (outside or inside) at any time - and we are a smoke-free, pet-free property. NO EXCEPTIONS.*

Weekend wedding
We came to Vermont for a wedding and stayed here. The house is huge and has so much charm. The kitchen is equipped with lots of dishes, utensils, pots and pans. My only suggestion is they send out the contract that needs to have everyone’s names ,ages and birthdates and the list of rules earlier than a week before your trip.

Great Place To Meet with Friends
Place was great! Much bigger than even the pictures can show. Plenty of room to fit 12 people easily. The griddle/stove in the kitchen was added bonus. So much so that my wife is looking to upgrade at our own home.

Family Reunion Thanksgiving
This is a very charming very old home with a nice big yard. My siblings and I hosted Thanksgiving dinner with all of our adult kids. It was a special time for all. This house is very old and needs to be handled with care. There are the expected glitches here and there but the owner is super responsive and easy to deal with. We had a great time and would happily visit again!

Historic accomadations
This is an very very old farmhouse with a lot of charm. Each room was decorated differently, and there were so many different area's to sit and talk. The wifi was very strong, and easy to connect to. My only disappointment is we didn't have enough time to sit out on the front porch and rock on the beautiful rocking chairs. We were only there for a short weekend for a family wedding. Knowing ahead of time about the hot water supply, we had a good schedule for our large family to all be ready for the wedding.

Great Family Getaway
This property was perfect for our family. There was so much space and we were all so comfortable - due to the freezing temperatures we actually never left the house for the weekend and we had a blast. So much quality time - the house is well equipped with everything needed for all.

Beautiful historic house, could use some TLC
Pros: We had a lovely week here. There was plenty of room for 6 working adults to spread out in different corners and not interrupt one another during the day and the lightening fast internet served us well. We enjoyed convening in the "red room" for cocktails around the fireplace at the end of the day. Beautiful area. The high power gas stove was a treat to cook on. The house is a colonial gem with historically accurate paint colors and tons of charm. Cons: The owners are long distance and it shows. The linens are bleach splattered, the towels are covered in hanging threads. Whoever is managing the property for them should communicate these needs. No basic pantry essentials, prepare to bring everything. Nor any of the kitchen extras that people who like to cook would appreciate (no blender, no measuring utensils, one fraying kitchen towel). The water hoses to the washer are flipped so that hot and cold are swapped, meaning that the "rinse" mode is scalding hot. The hot water runs out quickly. The master bedroom has a comfortable mattress but the rest of the beds are uncomfortable. This is mentioned in the captions of the photos, but I did not appreciate just how markedly different some of the rooms would be from how they are pictured. Salt would be appreciated for the walkway into the house - it was completely iced over when we arrived and made for tricky entry into the house. Given that fires are necessary to keep the rooms habitable, it would be nice if firewood were provided. Overall: We enjoyed our time here and with some TLC this house would really shine. Our experience was overall a positive one, but we wouldn't return in its current state.

Family Gathering/Ski Trip
I booked this property for a trip with my wife, our kids, and our extended family. The description of the property was accurate and Paul was very kind and responsive throughout the process from booking to checkout. Our stay was great, the house is absolutely gorgeous and the colonial-era architecture was a huge hit with us. We had 10 adults, 3 kids and a dog and the property easily accommodated us all. Location is great for skiing at the Southern VT ski areas especially Bromley and Stratton. I expect we'll be repeat customers!

Rustic Vermont Loveliness
We had a lovely stay in this home. It is very large and can accommodate a big group comfortably. We had some problems with the propane fireplace which was unfortunate as it left the kitchen area unbearably cold at times. The owner did send someone out twice, but a part needed to be ordered so what can you do. Also, the one fireplace that is in the most comfortable gathering space doesn’t work so fires weren’t really a sensible option. Otherwise, it has everything you need to cook and serve many people. This is a rustic house but the epitome of Vermont.

Great for large group
The property is an old farmhouse. There are 6 bedrooms upstairs, but be aware the steps are steep and somewhat narrow so children (who tend to run up and down stairs) and anyone who has any difficulty with stairs may find it a challenge. Also many of the chairs in the dining areas are quite old and seemingly fragile - some with caning - so not great for kids or more generous frames. The cookware is sparse and dated and the older Wolf gas stove is not the easiest to cook with. However we had an extended family of 13 and with all the bedrooms slept very comfortably.

VT farmhouse
The house was great for our a purposes- it has many bedrooms and fit a big group of us. The checkin process was also seamless and Paul was very helpful with any questions we had. My one comment is I think the mattresses/linens could use an update— some of them were a little old. Otherwise, the stay was great and I’d recommend to others looking for a Vermont getaway!

Incredibly beautiful in Fall!
My family had such a wonderful time enjoying this space and property. The house was quaint, but what made our stay was the yard. There's so much space for lawn games and an awesome fire pit. The flower garden is stunning, and during the autumn, the leaves and scenery are incredible!

Good Time
Very large home that accommodated a lot of people (15) for a ski vacation. Being that we were all indoors in the evening, there was plenty of room to spread out for both the children and adults. We made use of the large dining table and the two living rooms, for sure! And still had plenty of room for all of the items needed for skiing. The house was centrally located to both Manchester Center and close to Bromley. We had a great time!

Nice and big house
We liked the house. It is an old house and you can tell, but we knew that going in. The Paul Foucher, the property manager (or owner) was very helpful and understanding. We were a big group with kids and we had a great time. The only thing I could say it needs improvement are some of the chairs in the house are very old and brittle, and the house could be cleaner (there were a lot of dust in the drawers, crib, under and next to the beds, etc.).

It’s all true!
After spending the weekend with 8 adults & a few dogs there’s little I can add to the description of this rental, other than confirming all of the info is true, accurate, and that communication was fast, friendly and efficient. It’s a great house in a beautiful area, with plenty of room and a group-friendly layout. Despite its historic beauty, it kept plenty warm during some early season single-digit nights! We’ll definitely be back!

Great ski weekend getaway
We spent the Washington Birthday weekend at this historic home with our three daughter and their families, including two toddlers. If you love old homes, cozy fireplaces and a fantastic view of Mt. Equinox, this is the house for you. Paul had excellent and very detailed directions for the house which was very helpful. He was very responsive to text and email questions. The very large living room proved to be the perfect gathering spot for all of us with the two babies in the middle with various blocks, books and items we brought with us. If you like old books, you could be kept busy for hours thumbing through them and enjoying some old games. The kitchen is not overly large so not too many cooks in the kitchen at one time. Paul had warned us the stairs to the second floor were steep and the wood floor slippery, and he was right. One baby stayed with her parents in the in-law bedroom suite off the back of the house, as that daughter is also pregnant, which worked out great. There had been a 20 inch snowfall a few days before our arrival but the house was all plowed out. Having babies in an old house that is not baby proofed, requires a bit of attention. The road the house is on can be a back way to the ski slopes if you want to avoid the Manchester traffic. It had fantastic views of lovely homes and fresh snow sure helped to give it a postcard look. A little ways down the road, in the opposite direction is a wonderful red covered bridge - Chiselville Bridge. I left my ipad on the bed when we packed up and Paul put me in touch with the property maintenance person. She mailed it right out to me and I was able to send her a check to reimburse her. I was so thankful. The house is large and can accommodate quite a few without bumping into each other. I think the fall would be a beautiful time to stay for some leaf peeping. The beds were made when we got there which was a nice touch.
