Augustiner Brewery

High-quality beer brewing has been going on at this site of this former monastery for almost four hundred years.

Begin your visit by following the tour of the Augustiner Brewery (Augustiner Bräu). This shows you how and where the monks used to brew their famous beer. The “path of beer” traces the steps in the brewing process in a fun and information-packed presentation, from the beginnings of fermentation to the washing and filling of bottles. Over the course of four months, six different steps are involved in producing the end product – excellent beer with no preservatives or any other artificial elements. The tour takes a couple of hours, don't ask what the recipe is though – it's a closely guarded secret! When your learning is finished, come and taste the final result in the largest beer hall in Austria. The setting combines the rustic with the tastefully designed. Long earthy wooden tables are housed under attractive baroque ceilings, and there’s also the option of a beer garden for warm summer days. Buy a token from a cashier, and then get your beer from the self-service machines or if you'd prefer to be served, you can pay a little extra and a barman or barmaid will be happy to help. Keep an eye out for special brews, such as the Christmas Brock or the Lenten Beer (sold during the Christian festival leading up to Easter).Football matches are shown on big screens and small concerts are also held onsite – have a look at the brewery website when you're planning your visit. Groups with children are also welcome.Construction of the monastery began in 1607 and completed in 1614, with beer brewing beginning in 1621, a tradition that continues to the present day, outlasting the monks who no longer inhabit the monastery.Augustiner Brewery is open every day, except on significant public holidays. There are buses available from the main train station in Salzburg, and it is only a short drive from the city. There is plenty of parking on site.
