Make your way through the quaint, bohemian suburb of Barranco to find the Bridge of Sighs, the Puente do los Suspiros. This romantic little bridge, along with its scenic surrounds, has long been a favourite of lovers and locals for an evening stroll. Come and see for yourself what the fuss is about.
Built in 1876, the Bridge of Sighs is a simple wooden bridge suspended over a scenic stone walkway named the Bajado de los Baños. The bridge is only around 44 metres (144 feet) in length, but it is wide enough for several people to cross at any given time. At its end, you will reach an outlook with panoramic views of the sea.
The Bride of Sighs takes its name, as you would expect, from a rather melancholy legend. According to the story, a local girl was forbidden by her wealthy father from seeing the man she loved because that man was just a lowly street sweeper. The girl then stood by her window, lovesick and her loud lamenting sighs would be heard by anyone who crossed the bridge.
Visit the bridge in the evening to enjoy one of Lima’s greatest sunsets. The bridge and the stone walkway below are usually lit up in a most romantic glow. Any time of day, the views over the Bajado and beyond are truly memorable. Visitors will also enjoy looking at the colourful colonial houses all around.
After visiting the bridge, take some time to explore the surrounding area. Street performers and vendors congregate by the bridge and a nearby patch of grass makes for a lovely picnic spot. Explore the Barranco neighbourhood, a bohemian district that is charming, relaxed, and well serviced by cafés, bars, and restaurants
The Bridge of Sighs is about 18 kilometres (11 miles) south of central Lima. It is best reached by taxi or public transport, with the Plaza de Flores bus stop nearby. Consider visiting one of the numerous nearby beaches while you are in the area. Playa Barranco and Playa las Cascadas (Beach of Waterfalls) await you.
