About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire home to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

Wizard's LOTR Cabin: New Treehouse Addition! Pet-friendly.

Come and surround yourself with the magic of the wizards! We are excited to add our new Wizard's Treehouse Room! Perched around a tree and next to a zip line, it offers privacy and fun, with a slide delivering you to the ground. Property also features a hot tub opened year-round, and 3 acres of fenced land. We're just three miles from Cedar Lake Memorial Campground featuring boating, fishing and a magnificent descending sand lake shore. 27 mile-long Soo Line Trail offers hiking, biking, and snowmobiling. Free Wi-Fi. Full bathroom with shower. The Wizard's Cabin is on the edge of a rural town of 450 with a park, bar/restaurant. Upsala is the town where "Things are always looking up!" Diversity is most welcome.

More information

The cottage itself is timber-framed. Its timbers were locally harvested and it is artfully crafted and decorated, with a soaring loft area accessed by ladder, and cozy living space with fireplace. There is a very large 20' X 30' deck with chairs in the front of the cottage, a smaller, more private deck outside the back patio door, and a covered porch. It also now boasts a 14 X 14 tree room with lots of light and magic, and a small deck that surrounds a gnarled old tree, much like the Ents. Visit our Mordor corner, featuring the great eye of Sauron, fun signs and warnings, and a surprise when you open the Mor Door.

Guest access

The cottage will be unlocked for you prior to your arrival. Parking is available on the street or right on the property. The three acres is yours to roam, as are wooded areas surrounding the property. Paved roads and very low traffic make for good bicycling and we have bike and walking trails nearby. A fountain and 16' waterfall is a water feature in our yard, creating pleasant "white" noise.
We also offer a full size refrigerator, a gas oven with four burners, a microwave, a kitchen sink, and a flush toilet.

Interaction with guests

We are retired and we do live in a separate house on the property so we're usually around to make sure you have everything you need/want. My goal is to provide the privacy that you've likely come here to find.

Other things to note

We are 8 miles from bike/hiking trail access near Bowlus, MN, so you have a choice of whether you want to start your excursion from here or drive there. We also lived on a paved street with extremely light traffic. Good for biking, walking, running, dog walking.
Hunters and fishing folk are welcome during those seasons. For local hunting/fishing opportunities, please look up Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). We are in the corner of Morrison, Stearns and Todd Counties, and we recommend starting your searches there.
We welcome families, singles, couples, and pets. We have 2 dogs, 2 sister cats, and a waterfall feature on the property.
We are 1.5 - 2 hours from the Twin Cities, so consider us for get away accommodations. We are far from the "madding" crowds, light and air pollution. See the stars again. And watch for the magic.

Great LOTR adventure
We were looking for a getaway and this was perfect for us and our two dogs! We’re huge LOTR fans so it was such a great scavenger hunt. The owners’ house and one other rental is on the same property, but they’re spaced far enough for plenty of privacy. The cottage itself doesn’t have a ton of privacy from those you travelled with, but it would still be great for a small family. The treehouse room is accessible from either outside or up the ladder and through the loft area. And Jill and Joan were so kind and very quick to respond whenever we had questions. We could not recommend this place enough!

Outdated photos and shared property
Overall it was a good weekend get away. The photos are very outdated. The bed is not comfortable. The property is shared with the owner and another rental making it difficult to enjoy the shared hot tub and letting the dogs be free. Hot tub and dog friendly are the two things we specifically look for in properties, so to be disappointed in those two things made it difficult to enjoy. Property is right outside of a small town. Beautiful walk to a small bar with the best burgers we’ve ever had. Communication and response rates from the owners was timely and friendly. Although displaying your presidential preference is a freedom of choice, personally I don’t think you should when running a business. Fun fact, I learned LOTR is short for lord of the rings, so expect that theme. My wife was pointing things out to me, so that was fun. The only way upstairs inside is the ladder, so consider the need to go outside to go up if you have dogs or a hard time with ladders. Thank you for providing a comfortable place to stay for our weekend.

We had a great time!
A few friends stayed at the LOTR Cottage as a fall get away. It was so cute and so cozy. There is a hot tub availabe for use, 2 different zip lines, a fire pit with firewood available for purchase. The host Jill and Joan were so sweet, very nice and communication was excellent. It is located near a small town of Upsala were the local bar was so welcoming. Gave us great hospitality and the food was great. There is a grocery store very close by as well in case you needed to pick up anything. We brought. Projector and had a scary movie playing by the fire - it was perfect. The one and only thing I have to say is we werent aware there was another rental on the property. Which absolutely wasnt a problem for us. We just werent sure if sharing the hot tub would have been an issue. Which for us it wasnt. That being said, we would stay here again! Jill and Joan were fabulous.

Magical!
I had a wonderful stay at Jill and Joan’s. I especially loved that the patio is enclosed by a fence and my little dog was able to freely roam about without any worry of getting away from me. The cabin is charming and cozy and has everything needed for a relaxing time. My only regret is that I couldn’t say longer!

Great Place - Highly Recommend! Relaxing, Fun Theme, Great Space!
My wife and I booked this for our anniversary and it was a great weekend for us. It's such a relaxing atmosphere. We felt like the house was a great size for the two of us. I would say up to four people could work, but it was really good for two. The hosts were great and the LOTR theme is fun. Overall, I highly recommend it and we plan on going back sometime. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway in a cozy cottage, this is definitely a great option you should check out! This is right at the edge of the two of Upsala. I only gave 4 stars on location/neighborhood because the two times we went into town the local people kept looking/treating us like "outsiders" to the point that it was starting to get uncomfortable. The actual listing and property for this VRBO is awesome. That is 5 stars. The town of Upsala was not that great, but this is the type of VRBO where you don't want to spend a ton of time in town anyways. Two other small recommendations: 1) If you do go into town, bring cash. Only the gas station and small grocery store do cards--everything else is cash only. 2) It's a little bit away, but Cafe Boho in Holdingford is a great spot to visit for a meal/coffee when you are at this VRBO.

Perfect get away from life trip!
We had a blast! Jill and Joan are so creative and warm! The moment we pulled into the property it was as if we entered another world. The cabin we stayed in had so much character and was so peaceful and comfortable. There were so many lakes within a short drive so we had plenty to do and relaxed at night. We really had a great time. We will probably be going back!

We were intrigued by the LOTR theme. There were so many features to absorb that we were still noticing them by the end of our stay. We appreciated the complimentary fresh eggs and soft drinks, very nice. We had fun with the zip lines, the slide, and enjoyed the hot tub. This is a unique property that met our needs for a relaxing, quiet, private time.

Out of Town Staycation
We were looking to bring our anxiety-ridden, reactive and bitey dog with us for a test run road trip. This cottage was perfect to get out of town a couple hours away and give that a try! We are also massive nerds, so the decor was spot on for us. Hosts were great and helped out with the one issue we had in the kitchen. Overall fantastic and wonderfully quiet. We essentially road tripped to do a staycation and it was exactly what we needed!

Wizzards treehouse cottage
My wife and I stayed in the new treehouse room that Jill and Joan added to their Wizard's Cottage. The treehouse room is full of windows and beautiful lights. The moon through the night really impressed us with the beautiful stained glass views. With three decks and room to spread out, we enjoyed the Lord of the Rings theme and creative decor. Great hosts made us feel at home and definitely have a nice price for everything offered. We're hoping to bring friends, family, especially grandchildren, to return soon for a longer stay.

The Wizard Cabin Experience
My wife and I wanted a little cabin to celebrate her birthday. We found the Wizard’s Cabin. We loved the description and felt it was just what we wanted. It also had a hot tub so we booked it. The hosts, Jill and Joan, were great. As soon as we booked the cabin, they emailed us. They got back to us quickly whenever we had a question. They were very helpful. Now, I am a large man, and I was concerned about where we slept after reviewing the pictures on Vrbo. The pictures don’t do it justice. We spent most of our time on the main floor; however, there is a second floor that can be accessed using a ladder from the main part of the cabin or a stairway on the outside. The second floor has a loft and a nice-sized room with another bed. The beds were fine for me, and my insecurities were unfounded. My wife and I are Hobbit and Harry Potter fans, so we loved the Wizard ambiance. The hosts go out of their way to add many little details to the cabin experience. They put a lot of work into it. We enjoyed it. If you are not into that, there is another cabin on the property that looks fun. We have not seen the inside. The one item we didn’t prepare for, even though it is in Vrbo’s description, is the hot tub. It is not next to the cabin. It is about 50’ away on the host’s deck. It is clean and well-maintained; however, you need to cross a green space to get there. Bring slip-on shoes. We had an incredible experience and will do it again.

Zipline incident
To start out I do want to say me and the hosts talked and I did get a partial refund. Around 1:30pm me and my Fiance arrived an hour and a half before so I contacted the host to see if the cabin was ready early. She was gracious enough to let us come early which was very appreciated. First thoughts on the cabin was that it was super cute and a lot of thought went into it, but the listing felt a little deceiving. There is another rental in the land as well as the main house the hosts stay in. There are 2 zip lines on the land, the hot tub is at the hosts house I believe. Going into the cabin we noticed all of the theming which wasn’t specified in the listing. There are tower eyes from lord of the rings looking into the main bed. It is Lord of the rings themed. The spacing was comfortable but the couch upstairs had glitter and dog hair scattered on it and didn’t seem the most cleanly. I went on the first zipline after signing a waver and it’s a deer stand in a tree you go on and it goes down to the ground. It was really fun so I decided to try the other due to it being lower and ending in a platform deck. I got on and ride it there’s a rope that got caught around my arm so I moved out quickly, put my legs up to try standing on the platform or even push off it so I wouldn’t hit it but the Platform was too high and I smashed my shin into the uncovered wood platform which in result bruised and made my leg bleed. We decided to go home and got a partial refund.

What an absolute nightmare
Things I wish I'd known before booking this for our honeymoon: • the beds are hobbit-sized (surprise, you're not staying in the advertised space at all, it's the attached Lord of the Rings themed mini-cabin) • the biden flags are whatever but also felt like an invitation for us to get hate crimed • the parking sign will fall over before you get there and you will be blamed for that somehow • the shower's well only holds 6 gals of water & the stench permeates the entire cabin • you're not allowed to use more than 3 squares of toilet paper at a time or the plumbing will back up • there's a creepy eyeball glued to the ceiling over the bed • but we couldn't comfortably sleep two adults in one bed anyway...on our honeymoon Worst of all - the privacy mentioned over and over again in the listing? Lies. Again, we're two consenting adults on our honeymoon. The hosts knew this. Imagine our surprise when we’re trying to have a private moment in the bedroom and we hear footsteps. Honest-to-god, "someone is in here without our consent and we are not decent" footsteps. We look out the bedroom window and there's the host! In the connected room, working on windows! One of which connects to our bedroom!! She admits to it in Vrbo messaging and still wonders what the big deal is. In response, both the hosts and Vrbo have been not only unhelpful but unnecessarily cruel. So we ran, obviously, and now we're traumatized by the whole ordeal out hundreds of dollars. What a honeymoon.
