Cenotes are deep natural pools formed by sinkholes, which are strewn across the Yucatán Peninsula. It is thought there may be around 6,000 cenotes in the region. The shallowest parts of the water are between 82 and 98 feet (25 and 30 meters) in depth, while in some places the sinkhole goes down much further.
