Surrounded by striking landmarks, this monumental and urban central square is also a venue for outdoor concerts and national celebrations.

Architecture, entertainment and history meet at Ljubljana’s attractive Congress Square (Kongresni trg). Admire important city landmarks, spot Roman-era artifacts, relax on grassy lawns and listen to live music performances. Congress Square stands on the site of an earlier Baroque-era square. It was rebuilt in 1821 for the Congress of the Holy Alliance, a conference held by Austria, Prussia and Russia to bring peace to Europe.

At the heart of the square is Park Zvezda, where tree-lined paths cut between lawns and form the shape of a star. Look for a gilded statue on the side of the park. It’s a replica of a relic discovered at the remains of the ancient Roman city of Emona, located in modern-day Ljubljana. Spot an anchor, which honors the unification of Slovenia with the coastal region of Primorje.

Enjoy a moment of people-watching from the benches that frame the paths. Gaze over the square’s eastern edge to the towers of Ljubljana Castle rising up over the Old Town.

Stroll around the perimeter of the square to see an impressive collection of architectural masterpieces. Among these are the richly ornamented Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity and the neoclassical Kazina building. Marvel at the former congressional mansion, now home to the University of Ljubljana. Watch an orchestral concert at the magnificent Slovenian Philharmonic building.

Free concerts take place at the square, especially in June, and range from choir performances to famed Slovenia pop stars and rock ’n’ roll tribute acts. Crowds also gather to celebrate national events such as Statehood Day on June 25. On this day in 1991 Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia.

Congress Square is about a 20-minute walk from Ljubljana’s main train station. Pay to park in the large lot beneath the square or use the public buses which stop close by. Visit nearby attractions, including Ljubljana Castle and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas.

Ask for a schedule of events at the tourist information office, a 5-minute walk from Congress Square across the Ljubljanica River.
