Dallas World Aquarium is so much more than just your average sealife centre. In addition to all of the underwater fauna and flora you would expect, this attraction houses land-dwelling creatures in multiple natural environments under one roof. Exhibits are arranged according to geographical themes over three levels.
The aquarium contains everything from giant pacific octopuses to the seahorses of southern Australia, and has faithfully recreated their natural habitats. Wander along a tunnel that passes through the massive 75,000-litre tank for an unusual perspective on the fish and marine creatures of the Indo-Pacific. Outdoors, black-footed penguins are ready to welcome you to the South African exhibit, which also includes some Madagascan wildlife in the summer months.
Unusual species are the order of the day here, from the birds and animals that are the result of Madagascar’s evolutionary isolation, to rainforest inhabitants from South America and Borneo that are rarely seen by the outside world. Get up close to golden lion tamarind monkeys, huge spiders, crocodiles, bats, electric eels and piranhas.
The Mundo Maya exhibit provides a fascinating insight into the folklore and culture of this ancient people by focusing on the animals which play such a large role within it, including tarantulas, flamingos and the mighty jaguar. There are many species of birds living here too, many of which fly free, creating an atmosphere of being deep in the jungle.
Head to the aquarium’s website to find a schedule of feeding times and performances. At the weekend, the unmissable Grupo Pakal performs an ancient Mayan ritual with performers dressed in elaborate feathered headdresses – a treat for young and old. All events are included in the ticket price.
The Dallas World Aquarium is downtown with parking available nearby for a fee. If you choose to travel by public transport, you will receive a discount on the admission price.
The aquarium is open daily except for Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas.
