Read about the secret plans construed between the rulers and the Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri to build Saxony’s largest church.
Today, the Hofkirche towers some 272 feet (83 meters) above the city center. Admire its Baroque architecture, including the belfry that rises above the front façade. Look for the 78 statues of historical and biblical figures that line the balustrades of the cathedral.
Enter the Hofkirche for some solitude. In contrast to the exterior, the interior is humble, acting as a blank canvas for the angelic organ sounds that often float through the air. Take a seat at a pew to listen to the music or join the locals for a Mass. Walk through the cathedral to admire its high ceilings and the Rococo pulpit within.
The Hofkirche is located in central Dresden, just a short distance from the Elbe River and a number of other major attractions. The church can be visited daily and is free of charge. Arrive via bus or tram, or on foot from Dresden’s city center.
