The Great Museum of the Maya World is a celebration of the culture, history, impact and importance of the Maya. Investigate permanent and temporary exhibitions filled with hundreds of religious sculptures, historical documents, bas-reliefs, ceramics and many other artifacts.
Spend time in the themed exhibition halls. Go to the Mayas of Today room for insights into the customs and activities of different Maya communities. In the Mayas of Yesterday room, view centuries-old wooden statues of saints, including figures that were prayed to for salvation from small pox, chicken pox and yellow fever. These diseases devastated the indigenous population during the time of the Spanish conquest. See the reproduction of a colorful church façade, which features an image of a two-headed eagle, a symbol of the power of the Spanish crown.
Visit the Mayab, Nature and Cultureroom for the sculpture of a mythical reptilian and bird-like being from the Chichén Itzá complex of Maya ruins. Peruse the fascinating objects in the Ancient Mayas room. Look for the clay sculpture of a corn god that dates from the 13th to the 16th centuries.
Explore the Chicxulub Aerolito room which explains the major extinction event in Chicxulub, Yucatan 65 million years ago. An asteroid, several miles wide smacked into the planet ending the reign of the dinosaurs. It left a crater that is approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter.
Enjoy other highlights of the museum, including miniature clay figures with expressive faces. These were made on the small limestone island of Jaina. You can also see short movies and documentaries in the Mayamaxroom.
