The crowning glory of Mazatlán’s Old Town, this 19th-century cathedral bears Gothic and Moorish influences and has a striking collection of stained-glass windows.

With its soaring towers, elegant cupola and imposing scale, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral (Catedral Basilica de la Inmaculada de Concepción de Mazatlán) dominates the historic center of Mazatlán. Marvel at its architecturally impressive façade and discover a lavish interior with chandeliers, icons, frescoes and mosaics.

The cathedral covers an entire city block in Mazatlán’s Old Town. Construction of the church began in 1856 and it took more than 40 years to complete. Walk around the exterior to fully appreciate its vast size and to survey its Gothic and Moorish features. Gaze up at the twin towers, which rise above a main entrance adorned with sculptures. Crowning the cathedral is a large yellow-tiled cupola flanked by smaller domes.

Inside, the cathedral is a true artistic gem, with Gothic arches supporting elegant Renaissance-style domes. Look for a gilded Baroque altar adorned with statuettes and featuring an image of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. The exuberant interior also has embossed wall decorations, graceful chandeliers and murals. Don’t miss the cathedral’s extravagant organ, built by famed French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

Come during the day when sunlight filters through the stained-glass windows, illuminating the cathedral. Many of its windows display the Star of David, in recognition of a wealthy Jewish family who donated money to the church.

The church overlooks Plaza República, also known as Plaza de la Revolución, a leafy square set around an old bandstand. Sit on a bench, find shade from the sun and reflect on the beauty of the cathedral. Vendors and food stalls dotted around the square sell drinks, snacks and other goods.

Consider combining a trip to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral with visits to other attractions in Mazatlán’s Old Town. Browse the stalls and sample local delicacies at the colorful José MariaPino Suárez Municipal Market or watch operas and live music performances at the Angela Peralta Theater. The Mazatlán Archaeological Museum and Mazatlán Art Museum are less than a 10-minute walk away from the cathedral.
