Inistioge is an excellent base for riverside walks, country hikes and fishing trips. The scenic village is nestled in the Nore valley south of Kilkenny and is surrounded by rolling hills and lush green fields. Sit down in the pretty village square and watch the world go by, or stop for a pint of Guinness at a traditional Irish pub. Many tourists visit as a day-trip from Kilkenny.
Take a walk around the village to discover its main sights. The village is small, and a walk will take around an hour at most. Find the remnants of a 13th century Augustinian priory, as well as several other medieval ruins. Enjoy views of River Nore and the beautiful 10-span arched Inistioge bridge from the village green or a riverside café.
The nearby Woodstock Estate was the home of the influential Tighe family for generations. Only the ruins of the once-impressive 18th century house can be seen today. The surrounding gardens have been fully restored and you’ll find many other gems across the estate. Admire the rare and exotic trees at the Woodstock Arboretum, which includes two striking avenues – one lined with Monkey Puzzle trees and the other lined with Noble Firs.
Inistioge is home to a popular summer festival offering entertainment. Catch live music, circus performances, a vintage car show and a farmers’ market. The family-friendly festival takes place each June.
The village offers plenty of beautiful spots for freshwater fishing. You can fish in the river right in the village itself or head further out for a little more peace and quiet. Some fishing areas are private. Obtain a fishing licence from O’Donnell’s pub in town.
Instioge is a half-hour drive from Kilkenny. There is plenty of parking in and around town. There is also a regular public bus service to Inistioge from neighboring towns, including Kilkenny.
