As you cycle along the network of trails that cross this expansive city park you’ll see colourful native flowers, fast-paced games of soccer and families enjoying the outdoors. Jordan Park is one of the most popular parks in Krakow. Watch as teenagers hurtle across the skate park on their boards or find a lakeside bench to watch the paddleboats skim across the surface.
Dating back to the 19th century, Jordan Park was the brainchild of a local doctor and philanthropist, Henryk Jordan. The social reformer designed the park to promote his idea that physical exercise was key to child development. The park was the first of its kind in Europe and the first public park in Poland. Like much of the city, Jordan Park was badly damaged during World War II. Its 52 acres (21 hectares) have since been restored and are now filled with trails, sports facilities and family activities that encourage the city’s residents to get outside and get active.
Join in a game of soccer with the friendly locals. Games are often played on the wide lawns and it’s not unusual to join in with strangers. Frisbee, rugby and other ball sports are all common. Reserve a tennis court to play a few sets with a friend.
The exercise trails that run through the park are a great way to test your fitness. Wake up early to beat the crowds and the summer heat. The trails are peaceful in the early morning. Hire a bicycle or make use of equipment spread throughout the park to get a thorough workout. Look for the 36 statues of notable Polish figures that dot the park. Take a kayak or canoe out on the lake for a change of pace and to explore the park from a different perspective.
Jordan Park is located just west of Krakow’s Old Town and can easily be reached on foot. There is parking available for a fee outside the main entrance and buses and trams arrive at the park regularly. The park is open daily and admission is free.
