This spacious square in the center of Ankara is a lively political and cultural hub, surrounded by malls, restaurants and hotels.

Kizilay Square is the political plaza of the city, where you will see many events, rallies and protests. Around the square are many charming alleys full of cafés and restaurants. Spend the afternoon exploring the narrow pedestrianized streets on foot among vendors and fisheries to get a real sense of Turkish culture. The spacious plaza has several water features, a central statue and rows of trees along the flanks.

The Turkish name of Kizilay Meydani translates literally as Red Crescent Square, in reference to the humanitarian organization known as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The group initially had its headquarters on the plaza before a mall replaced it.

Kizilay is a popular area to stay because it is close to many attractions and excellent transportation links in the centre of Ankara. Plenty of hotels and restaurants in the vicinity satisfy travellers’ accommodation needs. Make your way to the plaza to see if any events, such as concerts or political rallies, are taking place. A stage is often erected on one side of the square for musical groups.

Admire the two fountains on either side of a statue in the centre of the plaza. Enjoy the calm ambiance between the water features and the trees on a sunny day. Sit on a patch of grass with a picnic crafted from local ingredients. The plaza is adjacent to the scenic grounds of Güvenpark, where you can relax with family and friends in the afternoon.

Surrounding the square are several grand shopping centers full of boutiques and bistros. Choose from food options catering to everyone, from upscale restaurants in the malls to street food near the plaza.Make your way to the bars along Sakarya Street in the evening. Experience the party atmosphere after the sun goes down.

Take the metro to Kizilay in the centre of Ankara. You can also ride a bus from anywhere in the city to one of the many stops around the area. If you have a car, drive to the plaza, where underground parking is available.
