The Rheinseilbahn is Koblenz’s premier aerial cableway. It was built in 2010 as a feature of the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) hosted by the city in 2011. It has since become a key feature of the pretty town on the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), where the Rhine meets the Moselle River. Take a ride on the urban gondola and fly over the city’s pretty waterways. Snap photographs of the historic cityscape, which is framed by distant mountain ranges.
The cableway is a popular and scenic route from the river valley to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which is located high on a rocky peninsula. Make your way to the Valley Station and spend some time appreciating the cableway’s modern design. The system built and operated by Doppelmayr has been praised for its unique design, which has been skillfully integrated into the surrounding landscape.
Climb into your gondola and begin the short but awe-inspiring trip across the Rhine River. Stretching about 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) across, the cable car gives a fabulous vantage point across the city skyline. Spot some of the city’s landmarks as you fly over the river. See the Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral Palace) easily amid the cityscape. Check out the imposing architecture of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress as you climb up to the Mountain Station.
Disembark at the mountaintop Ehrenbreitstein Fortress or make the round-trip in one journey. The 19th-century fortress features the Landesmuseum Koblenz and a beautifully manicured estate. Wander around the gardens or check out the war memorial. Appreciate the views of the Deutsches Eck and the Middle Rhine Valley.
The Rheinseilbahn’s Valley Station is a 20-minute walk northeast from Koblenz’s city center railway station. The walk will take you through the heart of the city’s Altstadt (Old Town). Cableway ticket prices are reduced for students and families. The journey on the cable car takes about 5 minutes each way. Purchase a combined ticket for the Rheinseilbahn and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress for an exciting day of sightseeing.
