Ski-In Ski-Out Studio, near Mazama Store and trail system

This ground-floor studio apartment opens onto wooded grounds and lawn, below the towering Goat Wall, in Mazama at the base of the North Cascades Mountains. Attached to the separately rented Big House rental, with its own, separate entrance.

Please read this--yes, rather lengthy--listing description as it should answer most questions that arise. Please also read the house rules, welcome guide and other areas of the property listing.

Just a short drive from miles of mountain biking, hiking and Nordic ski trails. You can also ski and hike out your door! North Cascades National Park is ~40 minutes drive and can be accessed by Highway 20 in the summer.

Near the wonderful Mazama store with its local ambiance and delicious food that is popular with locals and visitors alike. Also very close to the Methow Valley trail system for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and hiking. There is also rock climbing in the area and a popular spot for this just down the road towards Mazama Store.

The Studio at Mazama Retreat has a queen bed and queen sleeper sofa, full bath and kitchen with coffee maker, full refrigerator, baking dishes, cutlery, dishes and blender; and a multi-function counter top convection oven and double burner countertop infrared stove. There is a seating area, smart TV and small dining table. Outdoor table and charcoal grill adjacent to the studio's entrance (not available in the winter).

There is also an attached large home with its own, separate entrance, which you can rent if you have more than 4 people, or want complete privacy. This "Big House" sleeps 13. The property is 5 acres and the lawn areas are very large. Be aware that though most people are quiet and respectful, it is human nature for humans to get excited, laugh...the house is not soundproofed.

Relax in the evenings on the garden benches, enjoying the views, or take a stroll on the trail running along the back of the property. In the winter, a MVSTA trail crosses the driveway, a groomed cross-country ski trail that joins over 100km of other groomed trails in the 2nd-largest cross-country ski trail system in the country. For those who prefer snowmobiling, the Yellow Jacket Snow Park is just a few miles up the road. A mom and pop downhill ski area is about 45 minutes away between Twisp and Omak.

The delightful Mazama Store is ~1.5 miles away on Lost River Road, with its local ambiance and delicious food that is popular with locals and visitors alike. Mazama Retreat at Goat Wall View is close to the extensive Methow Valley trail system for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and hiking. (As mentioned, the ski trail crosses the driveway in the winter.) There is also rock climbing in the area and a popular spot for this just down the road ~1/2 miles towards Mazama Store. Fly-fishing and swimming holes with clear, cool water are a few minutes away.

If you want to truly unwind and be somewhere it’s much easier to unplug and do snuggle-up indoor stuff like board games and puzzles or cooking together, or relaxing out of doors with a glass of wine or craft beer on a huge rock or at a picnic table on the lawn while you listen to the gentle breeze and the echo of ravens, an eagle soaring high up next to Goat wall and other birdsong, then this is your place. Plus you’ve got a national forest and little used trail right out the back gate and the cross country ski trail crossing the driveway in the winter, connecting to 200km of trail in the valley. Some folks' idea of heaven on earth.

Be aware that the photos are not 100% accurate, as things are frequently being moved around, redecorated, replaced etc. but they are still a good indication of the overall look-and-feel.

Please set your expectations accordingly to its rural nature (wi-fi is not what you find in urban areas for sure) and lack of labor force in the small population to contract for upgrades and other projects. Things move slowly here. If you require an immediate response (though I do my best to get back to you within a couple of hours), updated styling all around and smokin’ wi-fi, then this just might not be the best fit for you. This is a comfy place that wraps you in its arms and makes you feel at home. Fancy it is not. OK, you've been warned : )

Guest Access:
Ample parking. There is no public transportation here. You will need a vehicle or bike. Trails abound in the area. Lots of residents and visitors enjoy walking up to Mazama Store.

Other Things To Note:

**Winter Guests**
As a reminder, please expect winter weather and driving conditions. Snowplowing with the plowing services in these parts does not occur unless there is at least 6 inches of new snow. Please be prepared for winter driving and the possibility of getting stuck--including the driveway--even if you do have a car with snow tires and all-wheel drive and/or chains. Winter driving experience is recommended. Adventure! The outdoor grill and outdoor furniture adjacent to the studio entrance are not available in the winter due to snowload and snowplow access.

***The wifi/internet*** is consistently inconsistent :) in this area and the WIFI SIGNAL AND SPEED ARE NEITHER RELIABLY FAST NOR STRONG.
If you need strong and consistently reliable internet then Mazama may not be the best option for you (though it could be a chance to finally unplug...) Though it isn't common, there are times when the internet is not functioning at all if there is a storm etc (like most any place). Most of the time there is decent internet from which you can do Zoom meetings without a problem, but it isn't a sure bet.

Also, CELL PHONE RECEPTION IS NOT RELIABLE OR STRONG EITHER. Verizon gets one to a couple of bars generally at the property, AT&T has been not so great.

You can often, but not always, get pretty good cell phone signal from some of the major carriers up the road next to the Mazama store. This is not guaranteed. One of the rare places you can drive to and have the opportunity to really unplug, kick back, not-do, and relax without being as easily reached. They'll survive back home... That being said, you can generally get cell reception at the store.

For many visitors and residents, it's part of the beauty and benefit of the area to have less distraction/temptation to be wired in. It hasn't been an issue for most people--just want to let folks know to expect that the internet may not be rockin' out here i.e. you may not be able to reliably binge watch episodes on Netflix.

***GARBAGE & BEARS***
We are in bear country and they will explore unsecured garbage. All garbage that leaves the house, unless you are taking it with you off property, must be placed in one of the garbage cans in the garage. Do not place garbage anywhere else outside. The bears will get into anything else and it is not good for them or for visitors. Please help to respect and protect the bears' well-being.

*DRIVEWAY: please leave the driveway that runs in front of and past the house open for the passage of vehicles and especially the snow plow in the winter.

Quiet hours are 9 pm to 8 am. No parties or similar noise levels allowed.

Check-out time is 10 a.m. firm. Departures beyond 10 a.m. may incur a late check out fee.

*Please note our cancellation policy* Consider taking out travel insurance to protect you in case of any cancellation. Please do not expect us to be your insurance policy. We do not provide exceptions for and are not responsible for natural disasters which might affect your stay such as fires, smoke, floods, etc. As such, we do not refund your stay outside of the cancellation period guidelines (please read this section of the VRBO listing) if you decide to cancel due to an “act of God”, unless an official evacuation notice has been issued or all routes to the area are closed and guests are literally unable to come – which is a very rare occurrence. We also cannot provide exceptions for work conflicts conflicts, flight delays or cancellations, etc. Again, please consider purchasing travel insurance and understand that we are a very small business. If you still decide to cancel and did not elect to purchase travel insurance and part of the dates of your stay become rebooked we can refund that portion of your stay.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Beautiful location with minimal accommodations
I am an anxious person so knowing that I could easily trip the breaker and not be able to reset it was worrisome. There was no oven - so no pizza as planned. There was also minimal to no water in the bathtub so showering was out of the question. There is definitely room to make this a much more enjoyable stay.

No microwave! Not within walking distance to Mazama store and trails. Also, we were required to strip the bed and take all the garbage out to a locked garage - why did we need to sych a high price for cleaning? Too expensive for what we got.

Best ski spot
We loved that we could ski right out the door to trails! The studio had all the kitchen amenities and plenty of towels and extra blankets. We never heard any noise from the main house, it was a very quiet spot. Driveway was plowed a couple times, easy to get in and out. It would be nose to have a place to hang wet gear and maybe a big tray for boots? Thanks

Lovely quiet stay, for the most part
My husband and I were delighted to book this stay for a few days before Christmas and have a quiet retreat in the woods to ski in and out of. Communication before our arrival was great. The studio is a small unit built on to a larger house that had an extended family staying in it. We could hear the other guests through the connecting door, but they were considerate. The main concerns about this property: 1) Heating. There was a sign about the baseboard heaters, but it was quite chilly when we arrived around 5 pm and even turning them up it took half the night before we finally got warm. We had to keep the heaters cranked up pretty high, but it was below 0 while we were there. I appreciated the many extra blankets provided, we used them all! 2) The regular oven pictured and described in the listing was gone, replaced by an air fryer, but the host did not mention this in emails. I do a lot of food prep for our stays and had casseroles, etc., ready to bake. I had to scramble to adjust my dishes so I could cook them in the air fryer, which did not fit a 9x13 pan. The host needs to update this information immediately. 3) Electrical concerns. The entire kitchen is all on one circuit. This means a toaster oven, an air fryer, a 2 burner hot plate, a full size fridge, and a microwave all share the same circuit. We blew the fuse our first morning there while preparing breakfast. There was no information on finding the fuse box and the host did not answer her phone when we called. My spouse finally went next door and the other guests helped him find the fuse box in a basement bedroom of the main house, hiding behind a wall hanging. This is a major safety hazard as this is not up to code. There needs to be signage so guests are aware. The host did eventually respond to texts, but after we had resolved the issue. We really did have a lovely stay, but the host needs to be transparent about these issues before booking. Also, FYI: the driveway is steep, and it took a couple of days for the snow plow to arrive so we had to navigate it with 8 inches of fresh snow and 2 tight turns to get out our second day. Make sure you have an appropriate vehicle in winter. Also, T-Mobile does not have any service in this area, so if you have issues and that's your only service, you will not be able to contact the host with questions or problems except by email on the wifi. Thankfully AT&T had 1 bar so my spouse could call out.

The place was lovely and suited our needs just right. Basically we slept there and spent lots of time with my daughter and her husband who also live in Mazama. We even had them over for dinner in our studio for a change of venue in these wonky Covid limiting times. Would rent here again!

Mazama studio
Great location, quiet and peaceful. It has a small kitchen with adequate pots and pans but not much else.( no foil, cookie sheets, etc.) Easy access with lock box code. Bed was comfy. It was clean except for some cobwebs and dead bugs in the corners and bathroom light fixtures which made me think it had not been rented for a while. The bottle of wine left for us was appreciated.

Great getaway
Would definitely stay at this property again. Rented both the main cabin and the annex for a ladies weekend getaway. We had a total 15 ladies, shes ranging from 33 to 63, and the cabin/annex were perfect for our group. Clean with plenty of room. It was over 100 degrees when we stayed, so with no AC the loft got a little warm, but we utilized the fans, and brought an extra with us in anticipation of this. Basement bedrooms stayed nice and cool. The main cabin has 3 bathrooms, and the annex has one, which was fantastic for that many women, and we never ran out of hot water. The cabin was clean and well appointed, however there were not enough towels for everyone, so I'd recommend bringing a few. We had beach towels as we were planning some water time, so that was fine. Plenty of toilet paper and shampoo/soap minis if you forget yours. Kitchen had everything we needed. The deck has solar string lights adding to the ambience. Very peaceful setting, great location to access many hikes, or drive in to Winthrop. The Mazama store is just down the road and stocked with many provisions, fresh produce, fresh baked goods, and coffee. Everyone had cell reception at the cabin (which we had kind of hoped wouldn't be the case so some folks would put their phones away 😊) If you want the feel of a getaway, without losing access to amenities, I highly recommend this cabin.

Wonderful Goat Wall View
We had a very nice stay at Goat Wall View! The location is excellent for x-c skiing as a trail runs right across the property and you can park your car and forget about it for your stay if you bring enough provisions with you. I would take the owners warning about the driveway conditions in snow and ice seriously, as while it is well plowed there is a steep S curve hill to go down and then eventually back up at some point. It was very icy when we were there, but my all wheel drive with very good, practically new tires did well. The owner is very responsive to requests and even offered us help from her maintenance person if we had gotten stuck on the driveway on our way out, but luckily no help was needed. It is a great place to stay and well equipped for your cooking needs. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Great studio, very basic. It took a little time to get the place warmed up but it stayed hot after that. A light on at the property and the doorway would have really been helpful. In finding the property and opening in the door. Other wise it was a great place to stay and I would use it again.

We enjoyed everything about our stay, from the convenience of the Mazama store down the road to the quiet backyard setting. We felt comfortable with the cleanliness and appreciated the full kitchen for making meals to go and relax after hikes in the North Cascades. All around a wonder filled stay.
