Peruse exhibits of modern Italian works in this architectural treat. Its glass dome reflects its innovative art displays.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Il Mart) has more than 30,000 pieces that include engravings, sculptures and paintings. Make your way through this fascinating museum to learn about Italy’s avant-garde art movement. Visit the second site where futurist painter Fortunato Depero lived and worked.

Admire the intriguing architecture of the museum’s main building, which was designed by Mario Botta and Giulio Andreolli. Its entrance features a large airy dome of steel and glass that hovers over a piazza. Note the fountain in the center of the square and appreciate its minimalist feel and spaciousness. Capture photos of the fascinating dome, which has a central circle and gaps forming a small triangular wedge.

Enter the gallery for a guided tour of its permanent sections. Pick up an audio guide in English for a greater understanding of the art on display. The museum covers contemporary art with an Italian focus. The collection includes works by Balla, Depero, De Chirico, Fontana, Morandiand Andy Warhol.

Browse some of the 80,000 books in the vast gallery library. Purchase tomes from the bookshop, which has materials on dance, theater, photography, architecture and art. Relax with snacks and refreshments in Le Arti restaurant.

Walk south of the main museum for 10 minutes to reach the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero, where artist Fortunato Depero painted. It holds exhibits on design, applied arts and graphic advertisement.

The museum also runs the Civic Gallery of Trento in the neighboring city 17 miles (27 kilometers) to the north. Attend a workshop or event and inspect exhibits on art and architecture in this gallery.

There are entrance fees for each of the museum’s three sections. Each opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until evening.

Arrive at Rovereto Railway Station and walk northeast for 15 minutes to reach the principal site of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Take a bus to one of the stops surrounding the museum, which is beside the Giorgio Perlasca Garden. Parking is available, for a fee, in the lot beneath the museum.
