Established in the late 1980s, the National Automobile Museum has become one of Reno's must-see attractions. The history of automobiles, from their infancy through to today’s modern-day gas guzzlers, is traced with more than 220 vehicles for admirers to enjoy. This includes the opportunity to see the ground breaking Thomas Flyer, as well as the Batmobile from the classic 1960s Batman series.
Alternatively known as The Harrah Collection, the museum was founded by the casino mogul and vehicle fanatic Bill Harrah. He bought most of the original exhibits, but since his death in 1978, the collection has continued to blossom.
The best places to start a tour are at The Bill Harrah Story and the Magic Carriage, shows which are screened on the hour and last for approximately 25 minutes each.
The neatly laid out collection is divided into sections that span the automotive ages. There are galleries that stretch chronologically and come complete with fully-stylised street scenes (from the cobblestones of the 1930s up to the neon-lights of today). The displays include photographs, collectables and period fashions which weave an all-encompassing atmosphere of former times. This is heightened by the opportunity to examine photographs, collectables and period fashions. For a great memento of your visit, deck yourself out in full vintage dress and sit behind the wheel of a classic vehicle for a unique souvenir photograph.
The association between celebrities and cars is also well-represented in the museum. See James Dean’s Mercury Coupe from the movie Rebel Without a Cause, take in Elvis Presley’s 1973 Custom Cadillac or take a photo with John Wayne’s 1953 Corvette.
Although the shimmering automobiles are a stunning attraction in themselves, there is more to this museum that just the wheels. The Changing Exhibits Gallery is proving to be a firm favourite with visitors this represents the life and times of Bill Harrah, showing not only his passion for cars but also his turbo-charged lifestyle on the cusp of a changing America. There are also exhibits of automotive art and memorabilia.
Located in the Truckree River area of downtown Reno, The National Automobile Museum offers free parking and is accessible by public transport. It is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
