Bring your kids to this family-friendly complex that sheds light on the fascinating mound and other archeological finds of the region.

The Navan Centre and Fort is a complex that honors and attempts to explain an ancient pagan monument. The fascinating site consists of a circular hill where buildings once existed, surrounded by a ditch. Stop and reflect on the possible origins and purposes of this ceremonial complex that has become an integral part of Celtic mythology.

Arrive at the complex’s visitor center for its exhibits on the theories behind the fort. Browse artifacts and use interactive displays to learn about the region’s past. Attend the audiovisual spectacle to hear tales of legends from the Ulster Cycle, a collection of medieval Irish folklore. The show entertainingly demonstrates how people in the Iron Age and Early Christian Age lived.

Embark on a guided walk to the Navan Fort and imagine the area thriving with people thousands of years ago. Stand atop the hill where it is thought the kings of Ulster were coronated.

Discover activities for children, such as touring a model village and dressing up in period costumes while at the site. Kids can search for coins and bones in the archeological pit and make swords and shields in the Celtic style.

Hike along the Navan Ecology Trail to learn about the vegetation and wildlife of the region. Help your kids fill out the accompanying booklet for prizes.

Purchase souvenirs relating to the Celtic myths and archeological relics of Armagh in the gift shop. Relax at the restaurant and enjoy the serene ambiance, away from city life.

There is a fee to enter the complex, with discounts for children, families, seniors and students. It is open between morning and late afternoon. Note that closing time is a little earlier in winter, so check the official website for current information.

Drive west for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the center of Armagh to reach the Navan Centre and Fort. The ruins are a short walk north of the visitor complex. Leave the car at the parking lot on site.
