Our stay at the house was interrupted when a sump pump in the basement of the home caught on fire. We were awoken to a fire alarm in the middle of the night, and needed to get everyone out of the house immediately. The fire department came and put out the fire, but the house was left with a terrible (and unsafe) smell. The fire department stated that windows needed to stay open for 2 days. It was the middle of winter, and I did not want my kids breathing the toxic chemicals in the air from the fire (nor did I want to deal with open windows). As a result, we decided to end our vacation early, which was a real disappointment.
The home owner was reasonable at first, but clearly wanted us to complete our stay. She was in Florida, and didn't seem to understand the interruption that had occurred fully. I asked for a refund, and while she did refund me partially, she clearly did not understand our perspective, and instead did all she could do keep as much of her money as she could.
The house is fine. Not great, particularly the lack of bathroom space and no laundry, but in general you do get what you see, and the location is awesome. The owner was pleasant to deal with up until there was an issue. Once there was an issue, I thought she proved to be selfish and not very reasonable. I know she will refute this, which is fine, but it is honestly how I felt, so rent with caution. They clearly don't properly maintain this aging house, and if there is an issue, she won't deal with it as you woudl hope/expect.
