The gleaming silver campus in central Newcastle is one of the U.K.’s newest universities. Its students have voted the city the country’s best for students.

Though not established as a university until 1992, Northumbria University has long roots in Newcastle, reflected in its eclectic campus made up of a mixture of hyper-modern and Victorian buildings. Formerly a polytechnic, Northumbria University is the child of three Yorkshire colleges that have been educating students since the 19th century. Stroll through its city center campuses for a taste of the academic life that thrives here. Spend an afternoon mixing with students in the area’s many eclectic bars and restaurants.

Begin your visit in City Campus East, a hyper-modern complex opened in 2007 that is known for its low carbon emissions and minimal environmental impact. Wander between the law school and Newcastle Business School. Sip coffee in the courtyard as the super-hip students from the neighboring design school go to and from classes with drafting paper and projects slipped under their arms.

Cross the pedestrian bridge linking two campuses, which passes over the city’s central highway. Admire the modern architecture of the departments of City Campus West and step inside the University Library and Sport Central, a new sports facility, which is open to the community.

Admire the intricate brickwork decorating the Sutherland Building, once the Medical School of Durham University and a naval warehouse during World War II.

Visit the innovative contemporary art on display at the university art gallery, Gallery North. Be sure to spot, outside, the so-called Piller Man, a monumental bronze sculpture that is one of the biggest to ever be cast in Norway.

Northumbria University is in the center of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, north of the historic district, an 18-minute walk or 10-minute ride by public transportation from the city’s main train station. Walk here in 15 minutes from Newcastle Castle. A shuttle connects the city campus to the auxiliary campus on Coach Lane in about 25 minutes. Make the walk in about an hour. The campus itself is open to visitors at all times, though the buildings are often restricted to students, especially at nighttime.
