Visit Siena to discover a dynamic city in the heart of Italy, with a rich culture of food, religion and history. Wander streets that have remained unchanged for centuries and discover an old town that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Impressive cathedrals, museums, restaurants and craft shops make up just some of this Tuscan city’s attractions.

Lovers of history and art will delight in Siena’s preserved buildings and stunning architecture. Start your visit at the Piazza del Campo, the city’s main square. This pedestrian-only zone is surrounded by old houses and the impressive Palazzo Publico, a medieval palace. Venture inside the palace to find the Museo Civico, a museum where you can marvel at centuries-old frescoes.

For scenic views of the city, climb the Torre del Mangia (Mangia Tower). From this viewing point, you’ll be able to see the majestic Duomo di Siena (Siena Cathedral). Walk to this towering Gothic structure and learn about its construction that dates back to the 13th century. Admire its striking black and white marble façade and interior artworks. Be sure to visit the Libreria Piccolomini inside the cathedral to see a collection of frescoes and ancient books. Other places of worship worth visiting are the Basilica di San Domenico and the Abbazio di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, on the outskirts of Siena.

Stroll down the city streets to find a world of cosy cafés, craft shops and rustic restaurants. If you are in town on July 2 or August 16, watch the famous horserace known as Il Palio, which has been held twice a year since medieval times. Watch parades and join the festivities that enliven the town around this time.

Siena is located an hour and a half by train from Florence. Get around town using the public bus service and taxis or hire a car and take advantage of the city’s ample parking spaces. Be transported into the past with a visit to this beautifully preserved Tuscan town.
