"Amazing spot, sleeping to the sound of the waves. We had an outdoor tub and once it stopped raining, we took advantage of it and soaked in it. The only “bad” thing was the carpet in the bathroom; it has a moldy smell, probably because it gets wet and doesn’t quite air out. Other than that, wonderful stay! Also, Sue was very helpful with our late check in and communication. "

"It’s an acquired taste, bed is comfortable and it’s as clean as it can be, ( as there’s so much stuff, dolls, Knick- knacks) so if your looking for mod cons and clean lines, this is not for you, it has an outside bathroom, but totally undercover from the front door, so you won’t get wet if it rains and sadly it did a lot during our stay, so we didn’t get to enjoy the area as much as we’d like. Kath and Dan were very welcoming "

"We loved our stay in the Blackhouse Cottage, and wished we could have stayed longer. It was gorgeously appointed and well set out. The beds were super comfortable and we were snug and warm in the cold. So cozy and the perfect place to unwind and relax. We would stay here again and again. "

Quirky hotel with all updated amenities

"The Hokitika Fire Station was really a super quirky hotel with just about all of the amenities a family could ask for. We stayed for a night in Jan 2025. The hotel is close to the beach, restaurants, and activities. The fire station has quite a bit of history that's neatly written in the welcome book (please sign the guest book). There is plenty of parking and super convenient free laundry onsite! The sheets and pillows were comfortable and everything was basically 'fresh'. Could not have asked for a better place while there. "
