Schenley Park is a fantastic green space in the heart of Pittsburgh. The 184 hectares of rolling hills and forests are the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and get back to nature.
There is a wealth of options for visitors to Schenley Park, whether you want to push your body to the limits with an intense workout, relax and enjoy a picnic with the family, or explore the flora and fauna of Pennsylvania. Fitness fans will want to head out on the clearly marked walking and jogging trails that wind through the park. There are options for all levels of fitness and ability – head to the visitor centre for a map of the trails to pick the route that suits you. One of the most popular paths takes you up to Panther Hollow, where there is a large lake.
If running isn’t your thing, make your way to the Oval. This area houses most of Schenley Park’s public facilities, including tennis courts, an open-air swimming pool, and even an ice-rink in winter. Golf fans have two options – try the eighteen holes of the Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park, or families can perfect their Frisbee aim at the nearby disc golf course. A small extra charge applies to these facilities, and equipment is available for hire.
With all the delicious local produce available in Pittsburgh, it’s easy to gather up food for a picnic to enjoy in the leafy surroundings of Schenley Park. Alternatively, visit the on-site Schenley Park Café for hot and cold drinks and snacks.
On summer evenings, the park transforms into a free outdoor cinema – check online for details of what films are being screened and for details of other events.
