"You have few premium/luxury options in the heart of Downtown Monterey--essentially your options are the Portola and the Monterey Plaza. Choose Portola. The staff service is on par with your expectations/price, the rooms are well maintained and well appointed (slightly small), but updated and modern (won't find that at the Monterey Plaza). The lobby is stunning and sets the tone for your stay. You are literally steps away from the action on the Wharf, so be aware that this might be an energetic area during a weekend stay. Also, you may faintly hear the sea lions barking all day and night (I thought it was charming and opened the window while I slept to enjoy the ambiance). Garage parking is $22/day includes in/out--safe, secure, plentiful+paid EV charging by Blink. Restaurants and amenities are steps away outside the hotel, particularly the Wharf chowder houses. The area is very quiet at night time, which I wasn't expecting based on how busy the Wharf is during the day. Onsite restaurant (Jack's) is tasty with generous portions at a reasonable price point and ambiance to match. Check with hotel prior to visit for status of daily housekeeping (seems to follow chain hotel trend of non-daily housekeeping). Connected to the Conference Center, so if you're lucky, you will find your blue-eyed, 6'5 man in finance. The Portola is simultaneously an escape from the hustle of Downtown Monterey and the gateway to all the action. Truly a boutique hotel in its most concentrated form. "
