Gain an understanding and appreciation for the culturally rich Gyeongju region and the ancient kingdom of Silla at this informative and fascinating museum.

The Silla Arts and Science Museum is spread over three levels, including a basement. There are six different exhibition halls for you to explore. Try and visit the museum before exploring Gyeongju’s historical sites as it will give you a great overview of the region and its long history, allowing you to appreciate it all much more.

The area around the city of Gyeongju was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 and much of it is protected by the Gyeongju National Park. The Silla Arts and Science Museum was established in 1988 and its main purpose is to highlight the scientific and artistic achievements and progress made during the powerful Silla dynasty in Korea.

The artifacts on display cover periods from the Silla Dynasty through to the Joseon Dynasty. Admire the relics unearthed from the famoustumuli, the tombs buried in grassy mounds all over the Gyeongju area.

Inspect the many scale models on display in the museum to learn more about the building methods used in ancient times. The model of the restoration of the mesmerizing Seokguram Grotto is an especially popular and important one.

Look for other popular reconstructions, such as the massive and ornate bronze bell, which is said to have a unique chime, from the Sangwonsa Temple.

Once outside, admire the ancient Cheomseongdae (star-gazing tower) and learn how this observatory was used for astronomy in the past.

Combine your visit to the Silla Arts and Science Museum with a visit to the nearby Gyeongju Folk Craft Village. See how ancient craftsmanship is still going strong and has evolved to create modern masterpieces along with the traditional. Make your own, or get a handmade souvenir to take home.

The Silla Arts and Science Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday year round. Entry fees apply and private tours are available. The museum is best reached by taxi, car or bus, with parking available on site. The nearest bus stop is by the Gyeongju Folk Craft Village. Have your lunch inside the craft village, if you want to make it a day out and try some traditional Korean foods.
