Sopron is one of the loveliest towns in Western Hungary. The town is set within one of Hungary’s main wine producing regions and still retains its medieval layout. Wander along cobbled streets, discovering ancient churches and other architectural wonders. Learn about the town’s heritage at museums and galleries and then enjoy Hungarian specialty dishes and Sopron’s famous wine in a restaurant or café.
It’s impossible to miss the tower of the Goat Church dominating the town’s main square. Notice the stone goat held by an angel on the church’s top pillar, a reference to the legend that this church was built with treasure unearthed by a goat. Admire the church’s Gothic exterior and step inside to see its Baroque interior, including a striking red-marble pulpit. Find the Chapter Hall to see faded frescoes as well as haunting stone carvings of animals with human heads, representing the sins of humanity.
Find the ornate Firewatch Tower nearby to marvel at its wide range of architectural styles. Its 12th-century base is constructed on a former Roman gate, the middle cylinder and balcony date back to the 16th century, while the spire is a 17th-century addition. Climb up the tower’s narrow spiral staircase for magnificent views of the town.
Head to Új utca (New Street) to see the Old Synagogue, which was built in the 14th century. Look for a reconstructed mikvah (ritual bath) in the synagogue’s courtyard. Browse the interesting collection of Roman and Celtic artifacts and antique furniture exhibited in Fabricius House.
Head to the south shore of Lake Neusiedl, east of Sopron, to visit Esterházy Palace, a beautiful palace sometimes called the "Hungarian Versailles." Explore some of the 126 rooms of Hungary's finest Rococo building, including the banquet room which features a ceiling painting of Apollo in his chariot.
Fly to Vienna or Budapest and travel to Sopron by train. The train station is located within easy walking distance of the city center.
