South Beach is the southernmost beach in the United States. Located just outside the town centre and serviced by one of Key West’s main avenues, Duval Street, this tiny beach has a lively atmosphere year-round. Come to swim in temperate waters, admire picturesque views and enjoy the novelty of being on the southernmost beach in the country. Stop by for a quick swim in the early morning or bring a towel and choose a spot on the sand where you can spend the day surrounded by other beach-goers.
Hire an umbrella and a deck chair from a vendor along the waterfront. The vendors will often help you stake out your own patch of sand or carry your belongings for an extra tip. South Beach can get very crowded, particularly during the peak tourist periods in summer. Arrive early to find your own spot to stretch out and stay to enjoy the bustling atmosphere of this lively beach. If the crowds get too much, rent a snorkel or kayak from the same vendors and explore further out to sea.
Take a photograph standing next to the sign that declares South Beach as the United States’ southernmost beach. The umbrellas along South Beach and then the Gulf of Mexico beyond also provide an excellent backdrop for a souvenir photograph.
A café overlooks the beach. From its air-conditioned room, you can enjoy a snack or coffee with a view of the ocean, pristine sand and clear blue sky.
Hearty meals are served at restaurants just a short walk into town from the beach. When the sun goes down, enjoy the music and energy of Duval Street, where you’ll find young crowds hopping between bars and clubs.
South Beach can be reached from Key West’s centre on foot or by bike down Duval Street. There is plenty of pay-and-display parking located along the shorefront.
