Lombok is a volcanic island in the centre of the Indonesian archipelago, neighboured by Bali to the west. Known for its pristine stretches of coastline, secluded surf breaks and rural villages that have remained near unchanged for decades, Lombok is a breathtakingly beautiful and laid-back island.
Lombok and Bali have only 35 kilometres (22 miles) between them, but the two islands have stark differences. Bali has seen huge tourism and development over decades, whereas Lombok has enjoyed a much slower growth over the years. Lombok’s capital, Mataram, is often bypassed by visitors heading to the coast, but offers plenty of attractions of its own. Visit the Mayura Water Palace, a meeting place for 18th- and 19th-century Balinese royals, and Pura Meru, Lombok’s largest temple.
Lombok features some of Indonesia’s most scenic beaches and islands. Travel north from Mataram to Senggigi Beach to find luxurious resorts, abundant marine life among the corals of Senggigi Reef and awe-inspiring views from Pura Batu Bolong temple. A scenic route, dotted with villages, continues towards Bangsal. Here, find the gateway to the Gili Islands, three tiny islands off Lombok’s northwest coast, which offer a genuine and relaxing tropical island lifestyle.
For a break from perfect beaches and rolling surf, hike up the magnificent Gunung Rinjani, an active volcano and the island’s highest point. The base of the volcano is also an exciting destination, with its beautiful surrounding forests and villages.
Lombok can be reached in just 25 minutes by plane from Bali. Lombok International Airport is a 40-minute drive from Mataram. Enjoy a quick passage with one of the many boat operators that connect Bali to Lombok, Senggigi Beach and the Gili Islands. Passenger ferries also operate between Lombok and the rest of the archipelago. Explore the island easily and reasonably inexpensively with tourist shuttle buses, hired vans, motorbikes and charming horse-drawn carts.
Lombok’s proximity to the equator makes it warm year-round. Enjoy the island’s dry season between May and September.
