Minneriya National Park 8889 hectares in extent is famous for its large population of Elephants, reports of sighting range from 100 to a surprising 700 roaming in the jungle and see in the catchment area of the lake. Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Kandy became the capital city of the island’s last independent kingdom in 1952, before falling to the Portuguese, Dutch and British invaders through the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The sacred tooth relic was then moved to Kandy, as it was said that only the protector of the relic was deemed fit to rule the country. There are some 4000 different species of pants at Peradeniya Gardens. The 10,000 or so trees, which are the stars, are mature, lofty giants, many of them tropical timber trees. Highlights of the collection include the Giant Bamboo of Burma, capable of growing 40 metres height (130 feet) with a 25-centimetere steam diameter. And it can grow by a rapid 30 centimetres a day. Yala National Park – This park is famous for its high density of leopards, perhaps the highest in the world. You are also sure to see elephants-grumpy loan males during the dry months and large herds in the wet season. Sloth bear are also a big draw. You will also see mammal such as wild boars, several species of deer and wild buffalo. There is a plethora of reptilian species and platoons of crocodiles. As is common in Srilanka there is a huge diversity of stunning birdlife including migratory species such as the flamingo. It is also one of the few places in the world where the severely endangered black necked stork can still be seen. The uniqueness of the park is the sheer diversity of the habitat: dense jungles suddenly give way to lagoons and open plain areas and the park has a simply beautiful Sea front. Galle Dutch Fort

The strategic location of Galle along major sea routes made the city one of the most significant parts of the island, as it attracted merchants and vessels from around the world. By 1502, Galle fell to the hands of Portuguese invaders, commanded by Lourenço de Almeida. During their occupation of the land, they built a fort to hold their position over Galle. During the turn of the 17th century, by approximately 1640, the current occupiers surrender to the new invaders, the Dutch; in the form of the Dutch East India Company. The Galle Fort was then heavily fortified by the Dutch. In 1796, the British invaded Galle and seized control of the fort, but preserved the structure. It remained as their administrative capital until Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948.

The sandy beaches serve as sanctuary for several types of marine turtles including LOGGERHEADS and the LEATHERBACK turtle. The small turtle hatchery first opened in 1994, in an effort to promote responsible tourism and conservation. The hatchery buys turtle eggs off fisherman, in an attempt to discourage them from poaching and selling eggs. You will be educated on the importance of protecting turtle life, via the hatchery’s facilities that care for new born turtles until they are ready to be released back in to the ocean, an experience that you may even have the opportunity to do yourself first hand.
