What you can expect
The Selous (Nyerere) Game Reserve is among the largest protected areas in Africa and is relatively undisturbed by human impact. It harbours one of the most significant concentrations of elephant, black rhinoceros, cheetah, giraffe, hippos, lions, and crocodile, among many other species.
The reserve also has an exceptionally high variety of habitats including Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps, making it a valuable laboratory for on-going ecological and biological processes. Take part in an exciting boat safari and enjoy memorable adventures on half day game drives in the Park.
Day trip from Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park
Schedule
Morning depart from Zanzibar by plane to Nyerere National Park. The journey to Nyerere will take 1.5 hours. On your arrival you will be met by our guide and start your safari along the mighty Great Rufiji River. You will have a full day safari before heading back to the airstrip to take your return flight to Zanzibar at around 5pm.
Selous Game Reserve
At around 52,000 km², the Selous Game Reserve now Nyerere National p is the largest game reserve in Africa and the second largest in the world. Together with the adjacent Mikumi National Park and Udzungwa National Park, the Selous Game Reserve forms a vast ecosystem twice the size of Switzerland. The area was declared part of the World Natural Heritage by UNESCO in 1982. Due to the location and the terrain that is difficult to access, an authentic safari atmosphere has been preserved here, so that you can enjoy the wildlife far away from the large tourist streams.
In addition to lions, giraffes, zebras, baboons, impalas and some rhinos, the Selous Game Reserve is home to the largest elephant population in all of Tanzania (about 66,000 animals).
The main artery of the park is the mighty Rufiji River, which meanders its way through the landscape up to 100 m wide and serves as a habitat for many crocodiles and hippos. The rest of the animal world also prefers to stay on the shady and damp river banks during the dry season. The oldest baobab tree discovered so far has been dated to be 2,600 years old.
The range of activities in the Selous Game Reserve ranges from jeep and hiking safaris (with a ranger) in the north of the park along the Rufiji River to trips to the waterfalls of the Stiegler Gorge.
