Since its conception in 1893, the Denver Art Museum has acquired over 68,000 works of world art. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that this venerable museum is consistently at the top of most cultural Denver to-do lists.Designed in 1971 by the Modernist Italian architect, Gio Ponti, the seven-storey North Building originally housed all the museums’ collections. Over one million reflective glass tiles form a shield across the exterior and its castle-like façade reinforces its position as a fitting custodian of the artistic treasures within.Of primary significance here is the collection of American Indian Art which showcases the rich diversity of artworks from First Nations and Native American tribes. Woodcarvings, leather garments, beadwork and pottery are some of the artefacts that represent a cultural snapshot from prehistoric times to the present.Also held in the North Building is a world-class collection of pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art. This eclectic selection of over 3,000 artefacts includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewellery and textiles, and represents nearly every culture in Mesoamerica, Central America, and South America.Nearby, the award-winning Hamilton Building is designed to reflect the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. This imposing edifice has a number of sharp, acute angles that pierce the sky and surrounding space. As befits its design, the main collections contained within include the Architecture and Design collection as well as a first-class Modern and Contemporary Art collection.Families with small children will be pleased to know that the museum offers a host of activities and interactive displays that will foster a love of art and culture. Little ones can try on costumes in the Just for Fun Center or create their own work of art in the Paint Studio. When it’s time for lunch, head to Mad Green’s and pick up some soup, salad or a panini.On the way out, don’t forget to pop into the museum shop and pick up a souvenir.
