Get outside of the city centre to discover Shek O Beach, one of Hong Kong’s most idyllic areas that’s great for outdoor activities. Stretch out across the warm sand to work on your suntan or get active as you try the watersports the beach is famous for. You’ll love exploring the nearby Shek O village, where you can see many historic sites and try local seafood.
While there are a few shops and businesses that line the beach, Shek O is about as different to Hong Kong’s central business precinct as you can imagine. Away from the noise and constant energy of the city, this stretch of coast is perfect for having a midday nap or a refreshing swim in the safety of the watchful gaze of lifeguards that patrol the beach. The clean and calm water makes it the ideal place to come with children. Read a book under the radiant Hong Kong sun to recharge your senses.
Those looking for more adventurous pursuits will find them here too. Rent a raft to explore the water away from the shore or climb the impressive cliffs of Rocky Bay, a popular spot for rock climbers. Travel north to reach Big Wave Bay to go surfing.
Hike along the Dragon’s Back trail that leads through the Shek O Country Park to discover shady groves of bamboo forest. As you emerge from the dense park you’ll be met with sweeping views of the South China Sea and the many small islands that surround the peninsula.
Spend some time appreciating the Shek O village. With more than two centuries of history the village is home to many fascinating cultural sites, including the Tin Hay Temple, built in 1891.
In the evenings, cook up your own dinner in the waterfront barbecue area or enjoy traditional dishes at one of the many restaurants offering views across the beach.
Shek O can be reached by bus or car or by following the scenic Dragon’s Back Trail. The beach is accessible every day and there is no charge to visit it.
