Stadtpark, located in the northern Hamburg district of Winterhude, is the city’s most popular urban green space. The 150-hectare park offers a wealth of entertainment options for all ages, as well as beautiful sweeping lawns and landscaped flower gardens. Head to this popular destination to mingle with the local residents enjoying the relaxed surroundings and excellent food and drink.
The park’s origins can be traced back to 1902, when, in response to the increasing urbanisation of Hamburg, the city authorities decided to purchase the Sierichsche woods and nearby land. This former private hunting ground was carefully redeveloped before finally opening to the public in 1914.
If you’ve got energy to burn, you’ll find plenty of sports facilities to choose from. In addition to the athletics ground and sports hall, there are beach volleyball courts and an excellent open-air swimming pool. Next to the pool, you’ll find a large lake which you can explore by hiring a pedal boat or rowing boat.
As you wander along the network of paths criss-crossing the park, look out for the many stone and bronze sculptures by leading 20th-century artists. You’ll discover classically inspired pieces such as Arthur Bock’s “Diana with Dogs”, as well as modernist works by Richard Haizmann.
Families should not miss a visit to the Planetarium located at the far end of the park. This hugely popular attraction features spectacular shows that take you on a trip through the wonders of the universe.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to one of the many restaurants and bars serving local delicacies such as “wurst” (sausages), to be washed down with a chilled beer. For extra evening entertainment, check the park’s website for details of concerts held at the park’s open-air stage.
Stadtpark is open every day and admission is free. The closest U-Bahn station is Borgweg, or alternatively, parking is available nearby.
