Hagenbeck Zoo grew out of one former fishmonger’s passion for collecting and trading in exotic animals. Over the intervening decades since the 1860s, this collection has grown to include nearly 2,000 animals from around the globe, all housed in pioneering naturalistic enclosures. Follow the seven kilometres of trails winding through the 25 hectares of parkland to discover all kinds of creatures.
The zoo first opened in its current location in 1907, making history as the first to display animals without the use of cages. Carl Hagenbeck Jr. used his extensive knowledge of each species to design moats and ditches to surround each enclosure that the animals could not cross. Thanks to this concept, the visitor was treated to a more natural panorama, in which a whole range of creatures appeared to live side by side.
Nowadays, the zoo is set out according to geographical and climatic themes. As you first step through the main entrance, you’ll see the majestic herd of elephants roaming free in their spacious grounds. Head to the Africa section to view zebras and ostriches, and admire the fearsome lions in their savannah grasslands.
At the opposite end of the temperature scale, don’t miss the Arctic exhibit, home to polar bears, walruses and penguins. This high-tech facility uses geothermal heat exchange and solar power to maintain low temperatures throughout the year. You’ll be able to see animals both above and below the surface of the recreated Arctic Ocean, thanks to the underwater tunnels and viewing windows.
The zoo also hosts a number of shows and interactive events. See the animals up close during the feeding demonstrations. You may even be given the chance to hand-feed a creature yourself! If you’re visiting in May or June, look out for the magical Jungle Nights events, with animal encounters and stunning performances from dancers and acrobats.
Hagenbeck Zoo is located in the Stellingen district, about 20 minutes by car from the city centre. On-site parking is available for a fee. Alternatively, take the U-Bahn to Hagenbecks Tierpark station. The zoo is open every day, but times vary by season. Check the official website for the latest information.
